Episode: 1995 Stimulation and Hydraulic Tests Soultz-sous-Forêts

Description

After drilling GPK2 an extensive hydraulic program was performed in 1995 to test the well and the circulation with GPK1. The main tests were realized during June, July and August 1995. It consisted first of two injection tests at GPK2 in June. The injection tests revealed that the injectivity was too low to consider circulation between the two wells GPK1 and GPK2. A short term and a long term stimulation experiments were also performed in June at GPK2 to stimulate the fracture network. A total of 28000 m3 of fluid was injected during the long term experiment. Following the stimulations, a stepped post-fracturing injection test was realized to observe the results of the stimulations. Finally, three relatively short circulation experiments were performed in July and August by using GPK1 as production borehole and GPK2 as reinjection borehole.

Dates of the different tests of the 1995 hydraulic programme:
- First injection test at GPK2: from 11:26 11/06/95 to 01:50 12/06/95
- Second injection test at GPK2: from 11:56 12/06/95 to 23:11 12/06/95
- Short term stimulation experiment at GPK2: from 20:00 14/06/95 to 01:27 15/06/95
- Long term stimulation experiment at GPK2: from 10:24 17/06/95 to 16:03 28/06/95
- Stepped post-fracturing injection test at GPK2: from 08:08 01/07/95 to 20:02 02/07/95
- First circulation test between GPK1 and GPK2: from 08:35 09/07/95 to 21:32 24/07/95
- Second circulation test between GPK1 and GPK2: from 13:09 31/07/95 to 19:04 09/08/95
- Third circulation test between GPK1 and GPK2: from 04:50 16/08/95 to 19:19 20/08/95

Flow logs - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1995 Stimulation and Hydraulic Tests

Dataset

Flow logs from GPK1 and GPK2 were recorded during the 1995 stimulation, injection, and circulation tests, with multiple logs taken between February and August 1995. Detailed acquisition info is provided in each file header.

Hydraulic data - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1995 Stimulation and Hydraulic Tests

Dataset

Hydraulic data from GPK1, GPK2, and EPS1 were recorded during the 1995 stimulation, injection, and circulation tests at Soultz‑sous‑Forêts. The datasets cover June to August 1995, including surface flowrate/pressure/temperature series and downhole measurements in both GPK1 and GPK2 during stimulation phases and the three circulation tests.

Microseismic catalogue of the downhole network from CSMA - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1995 Stimulation and Hydraulic Tests

Dataset

This catalogue lists 5295 microseismic events recorded at Soultz‑sous‑Forêts during the 1995 stimulation, injection, and circulation tests. It provides event times, local coordinates relative to GPK1, and derived WGS84 locations. 3636 events overlap with another 1995 catalogue, with location differences due to different relocation models.

Microseismic catalogue with moment magnitude of the downhole network from CSMA - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1995 Stimulation and Hydraulic Tests

Dataset

This catalogue lists 3636 microseismic events with moment magnitude recorded during the 1995 short‑ and long‑term stimulation tests (14–29 June). It includes local and WGS84 locations plus source parameters. All events also appear in the full 1995 catalogue, with location differences due to different relocation models.

Microseismic downhole network - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1995 Stimulation and Hydraulic Tests

Dataset

The 1995 microseismic network used three downhole accelerometers, one hydrophone in EPS1, and an additional hydrophone in GPK1. Station locations rely on a local UTM32‑based system centered on GPK1, with WGS84 coordinates derived from it. The exact GPK1 hydrophone position is missing.

Catalogue with hydraulic data from Drif et al.(2024)- Soultz-sous-Forêts 1995 Stimulation

Dataset

Hourly catalogue of the 1995 Soultz injection, tracking injected flow/volume/energy and the seismic response (event depth, seismic moment, radiated and faulting energy) to quantify how hydraulic energy converts into seismic energy.

Microseismic catalogue with seismic moment and moment magnitude from Drif et al.(2024) - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1995 Stimulation

Dataset

Microseismic catalogue of the 1995 Soultz‑sous‑Forêts stimulation, listing all events with location, CSMA moment magnitude, and recalculated seismic moment and moment magnitude. It is derived from the CSMA 1995 downhole network catalogue and reprocessed following Drif et al. (2024).

GPK1 well

Dataset

GPK1, drilled in 1987 as the first geothermal well at Soultz‑sous‑Forêts, initially reached 2000 m (140 °C) before being deepened to 3600 m in 1992 (160 °C).

GPK2 well

Dataset

GPK2, drilled south of GPK1, was the third geothermal well at Soultz. Initially completed to 3900 m in 1995, it was later deepened to 5084 m to reach the ~200 °C reservoir for power production.
