Terms and Conditions
The Data EOST platform promotes scientific research by providing access to data on behalf of their respective owners (PROVIDER). The PROVIDER defines the specific distribution rules and citation requirements, which are detailed in the metadata associated with each dataset.
Definitions
DATA: Includes all data, digital maps, text, graphics, drawings, diagrams, photographs, physical geological samples, and other materials provided by Data EOST and its PROVIDERS.
PROJECT: Refers to the specific research or operational project of the USER. Depending on the PROVIDER’s rules, the USER may be required to describe the purpose and expected termination date of their PROJECT before data access is approved.
Conditions of Use
By using Data EOST services, the USER unconditionally accepts these Terms and Conditions. The Data EOST administrators reserve the right to revise these terms at any time without prior notice.
Rights and Obligations
- The PROVIDER grants the USER a non-exclusive, personal right to use the DATA for the scope of the PROJECT. Under this agreement, the USER agrees to:

- Non-Commercial Use: Use the DATA solely for the declared PROJECT and refrain from selling the DATA or any derived results.
- Integrity: Apply no changes, corrections, or modifications to the DATA unless explicitly authorized by the PROVIDER.
- Not divulge the DATA, even in abstract form, without authorization.
- Confidentiality: Not divulge the DATA, even in abstract or summarized form, to third parties without prior authorization.
- Publication: Seek PROVIDER authorization before publishing research results based on the DATA.
- Acknowledgement: Formally acknowledge DATA ownership and the permission granted in all publications.
- Reporting: Provide the PROVIDER with a free copy of any paper, report, or thesis resulting from the use of the DATA.
- Termination: Erase or return the DATA upon completion of the PROJECT or upon expiration of the access rights.
Special Conditions
DATA is provided free of charge under these conditions. If DATA mobilization requires additional effort (e.g., reproduction costs), the PROVIDER will inform the USER and charge accordingly upon consent.
The right to use DATA expires with the PROJECT termination date, if applicable.
Personal Data
Personal Data: Data EOST collects registration information to provide personalized services and generate anonymized usage reports. Consistent with our privacy policy, personal data may be shared with PROVIDERS to ensure traceability of their datasets but will never be sold to third parties.

Navigation Data & Cookies
Data EOST uses cookies to facilitate user navigation. A cookie stores browsing information but does not identify users personally.
Users can refuse cookies via browser settings, though this may limit service functionality.
Personal Data
Collection of Personal Data
The section requiring authentication collects personal information for traceability purposes. The personal data collected includes your identity (first and last name), professional contact details (email address and country), as well as information regarding your career (affiliated organization, job title, and job description).
Data Controller and Recipients
The data controller is University of Strasbourg. The personal data collected is intended exclusively for the internal use of ITI GEOT. Under no circumstances will your data be shared, sold, or leased to third parties, such as commercial partners or external organizations. Access to your information is strictly limited to authorized personnel within ITI GEOT, acting within the scope of their respective duties, to ensure service management and resource traceability.
Data Retention
Personal data is deleted after five years of inactivity.
Data Transfers
No transfer of personal data outside the European Union is performed.
Rights of Individuals
In accordance with applicable legal and regulatory provisions, particularly Law No. 78-17 of January 6, as amended, relating to information technology, files, and freedoms, and European Regulation No. 2016/679/EU of April 27, 2016 (applicable since May 25, 2018), you have the following rights:
- Exercise your right of access to know what personal data concerning you is held;
- Request an update of your data if it is inaccurate;
- Request portability or deletion of your data;
- Request the deletion of your account;
- Request the limitation of data processing;
- Object to the processing of your data for legitimate reasons;
- Withdraw your consent to the processing of your data.

Data Access and Distribution Policy
We adhere to the principle of "as open as possible, as closed as necessary." Our repository hosts a variety of scientific datasets categorized by specific access levels:
- Public Data: Open-access datasets available for immediate download by the general public to promote transparency and scientific advancement.
- Restricted Academic Access: Datasets accessible exclusively to verified academic researchers for non-commercial use, often requiring a simplified institutional verification.
- Case-by-Case / Industrial Data: Sensitive or proprietary datasets—specifically those involving industrial partnerships—subject to individual review. Access to these resources may require a formal request, a signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), or a specific Data Use Agreement (DUA) to protect intellectual property and confidentiality.
