Episode: 1993 Stimulation Soultz-sous-Forêts

Description

After the deepening of well GPK1 to 3590m in 1992, an extensive stimulation program was performed in September and October 1993. GPK1 was stimulated with large scale hydraulic injections to investigate the behavior and the extension of large natural fractures detected previously. A total of 44000 m3 of water was injected during the two major stimulation tests. About 18700 microseismic events were detected during the stimulation program by the downhole and the surface network.

Dates of the different tests of the 1993 hydraulic program covered by the data*:
- First openhole stimulation test at GPK1: from 01/09/1993 to 22/09/1993
- Packer test at GPK1: from 01/10/1993 to 05/10/1993
- Second openhole stimulation test: from 11/10/1993 to 21/10/1993

*Some other tests of less importance and not covered by the data of the episode were realized in 1993. Details about these tests are available in Baria, R., 1996, The European HDR programme 1992-1995.

Velocity model used to locate seismic events from the surface network - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

The Helm velocity model (after Beauce et al., 1991) was used to locate 1993 microseismic events recorded by the surface network. The corresponding event catalogue is available via the Helm surface‑network catalogue

Microseismic catalogue of the downhole network with moment magnitude from CSMA - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

The catalogue contains 10,744 microseismic events recorded during the 1993 stimulation at Soultz‑sous‑Forêts, with each event described by its location, source parameters, amplitudes, and timestamps.

Microseismic catalogue of the surface and the downhole network with magnitude from J. Helm - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

This catalogue lists 96 microseismic events recorded during the 1993 Soultz‑sous‑Forêts stimulation episode, providing their locations, magnitudes, and source parameters.

1993 VSP at Soultz-sous-Forets Phase 1

Dataset

A VSP survey was acquired in EPS1 and GPK1 from 3–5 May 1993, using P‑ and S‑wave vibrators at locations A2, A3, B1, B2, C3, C4, D1, D2. Four acquisition runs combined P, S‑NS, and S‑EW sources at these points for both wells.

Microseismic surface network - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

The 1993 surface network included 14 seismic stations (permanent, 1‑component temporary, and 3‑component temporary). Some stations were relocated to improve coverage. It detected 166 events, with the associated catalogue available, but waveforms are missing.

GPK1 well

Dataset

GPK1, drilled in 1987 as the first geothermal well at Soultz‑sous‑Forêts, initially reached 2000 m (140 °C) before being deepened to 3600 m in 1992 (160 °C).

Catalogue with hydraulic data from Drif et al.(2024)- Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

This dataset summarizes hydraulic and seismic‑energy metrics from the 1993 Soultz‑sous‑Forêts episode, including hourly flow rates, injected volume, hydraulic energy, and cumulative seismic moment. It supports the analysis presented in Drif et al. (2024).

EPS1 well

Dataset

EPS‑1 was deepened and cored in 1990–1991 to study the granite reservoir. Despite strong deviation, coring from 930 to 2227 m produced valuable scientific data.

Temperature and pressure measurements at fixed depths from Soultz-sous-Forêts - 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

Temperature and pressure time series were acquired at fixed depths in GPK1 during the 1993 stimulation, across 33 measurement intervals between September and October. Data cover depths from 2450 m to 3520 m.

Hydraulic data - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

Hydraulic data from GPK1 during the 1993 episode are provided in three datasets covering September–October, including pressure, flowrate, and temperature time series. One October file has inconsistent wellhead pressures, corrected in Hydraulic_october_2.

Downhole seismological waveforms acquired during the 1993 stimulation

Dataset

Seismological signals from the 1993 Soultz‑sous‑Forêts stimulation were recorded by three 4‑component downhole accelerometers and one hydrophone, with 2‑second records sampled at 5064 Hz and validated using the 4‑C sensors. The related catalogue and network description are available online.

Microseismic catalogue with seismic moment and moment magnitude from Drif et al.(2024) - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

This catalogue provides seismic moment and moment‑magnitude values for the 1993 Soultz‑sous‑Forêts microseismicity, derived from the CSMA downhole catalogue and updated following Drif et al. (2024).

1993 VSP at Soultz-sous-Forets Phase 2

Dataset

A VSP survey was acquired in EPS1 and GPK1 from 15–17 September 1993, using P‑ and S‑wave vibrators at sites A, D, and E. Four runs combined P and S sources at these locations for both wells.

Flow logs from Soultz-sous-Forêts - 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

Flow logs from GPK1 document depth‑dependent flow measurements during the 1993 stimulation, based on multiple logging runs between early September and mid‑October 1993. Each file includes detailed acquisition information in its header.

Microseismic downhole network - Soultz-sous-Forêts 1993 Stimulation

Dataset

The 1993 downhole network used three 4‑component accelerometers and one hydrophone installed between 1500 m and 2000 m depth. Station coordinates were defined in a local UTM32‑based system centered on GPK1, then converted to WGS84, with the related catalogue and waveforms available online.
